The battle for the United States House of Representatives is shaping up to be the most consequential of the midterms. It’s important to remember that.

Democrats are trying to protect their majorities in the House and the Senate. Which means we need to watch out for the Republican Party’s anti-immigration and anti-gay rights initiatives.

From Obamacare and the debt ceiling to immigration and gay marriage, Republicans are hammering on issues that will determine the shape of the next Congress and the White House.

At issue are issues that are at once traditional and not that well known, but they are important.

One is abortion.

The president has already shown that he will not support any legislation to restrict federal funding for abortions, and many Republicans believe he will not go this far.

That will leave Republicans defending the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the use of federal funds for abortion in cases of rape, incest or if the mother’s life is in danger.

Since the House is the only body that can repeal or replace any law with which it disagrees, Republicans will try to score some political points.

Republican lawmakers want to repeal the law by passing a bill to repeal the amendment, but they will also seek to protect the status quo.

It helps them to say that they will oppose any effort to repeal the law if it includes an effort to protect the Hyde Amendment.
