Trump calls Tony Evers to congratulate him on his run for governor of Wisconsin

Why the AP called Wisconsin governor race for Tony Evers: ‘It’s the right thing to do’

If you’re a conservative and you haven’t already, give Tony Evers a call.

The top vote-getter in the Wisconsin gubernatorial race will be President Donald Trump’s first foray into a state presidential primary in over a quarter of a century, a high-profile race featuring six candidates including two ex-presidents and a former first lady.

The Milwaukee-based conservative group Americans for Prosperity is working hard to bolster Evers’ chances of beating the Democratic nominee, the popular and pro-Trump Agriculture Secretary candidate, Phil Murphy, with a super PAC.

They’ve been successful, with AFP’s allies in conservative media giving Evers a boost, including his having appeared on the cover of The American Spectator magazine and The Daily Caller News Foundation’s “Right Talk With Chris Stirewalt.”

Trump and Evers, who are political adversaries, have a shared history. And the president called Evers’ opponent, Murphy, to congratulate him in a phone call Tuesday evening.

“Congratulations to Governor Tony Evers in his run for Governor of Wisconsin! You and I have a great relationship,” Trump said in a message to Evers on Twitter Tuesday night. “It’s the right thing to do. Hope you can win & keep America great!”

Evers’ message to Trump: ‘We have a great relationship, we don’t have to tweet about it’

In his message to Trump, Evers, who previously served as a Marine officer and state legislator, wrote, “We have a great relationship, the relationship is one I have shared with you. The relationship is one we have shared. We don’t have to tweet about it. We will work together. We will build together.”

Evers, the chairman of the Republican Governors Association’s board of directors, said in a statement that the President was simply giving an endorsement of his campaign.

“We have a great relationship,” Evers said. “It’s the right thing to do, something I’ve shared with him. It’s something we’ve shared. We don’t have to tweet about it. We will work together.”

Evers, in a statement, welcomed the endorsement by the president.

“It means a lot to me to be given this opportunity to get to know and respect this president and his policies,”
